Interactive elements in Looker Studio: Controls

Imagine you have an eCommerce site and you’re running online campaigns to promote it. You might be familiar with how to connect your data to Looker Studio and create a tracking dashboard. But what if you want to focus only on Facebook? Since you’re also advertising on Google Ads, if you don’t limit your report data to Facebook, it won’t reflect the actual performance of the campaigns you want to focus on. So, what do we do?

This is where the wonderful filters and controls come in, allowing you to display only a portion of your data.

You can filter your reports in two ways:

  1. Through components added to the page known as controls. These provide the end user with a greater degree of interaction with the report.
  2. By creating conditions based on your data sources. These are called filters and are applied in the configuration of the chart, the page, or the report. Only users with editing privileges can create them.

1. How to add controls?

It’s similar to what we’ve seen with charts. You can go to Insert in the top menu and select the control you want to work with, or choose it from Add a Control in the second top menu.

For the examples on controls, we will use the Products Superstore dataset.
